An EV diagnostic is not a $30 code read at a parts store. A generic OBD-II scanner sees the emissions subset of the vehicle's data — on an electric car, that is close to nothing. It cannot read the battery management system, it cannot see individual cell voltages, and it cannot test isolation resistance.
What you are paying $100–$300 for is manufacturer-level access plus someone who knows what the numbers mean. It is the test that determines whether you are facing a contactor, a module or a pack — and those are separated by more than $12,000.

What a real battery health test measures
A state-of-health report worth paying for tells you four things:
- Usable capacity against original — the headline figure, expressed as a percentage. This is the number a warranty claim turns on.
- Cell voltage spread — the most diagnostic single measurement. A healthy pack sits within a few millivolts across all cells; a wide spread means a specific module is failing, regardless of what the overall capacity says.
- Internal resistance — rises as cells age and predicts the loss of fast-charging performance before capacity drops noticeably.
- Thermal behaviour under load — whether the pack cools evenly, which catches cooling faults before they damage cells.
Insist on a written report with numbers, not a verbal "battery looks fine". You need the document if a warranty claim, a sale or an insurance dispute follows.
When it is worth paying for
Before buying a used EV — always
Two identical cars with identical mileage can differ by 15% in usable capacity, which is thousands of dollars of value and a materially different car to live with. A $250 inspection against a $25,000 purchase is not a close call.
Before your battery warranty expires
The capacity guarantee — usually 70% — only helps if you can show where you were before the clock ran out. Get a documented reading in the last year of coverage.
When range drops suddenly
Sudden loss means a fault; gradual loss means age. Only a diagnostic distinguishes them, and the difference determines whether there is anything worth repairing.

If someone has quoted five figures for a pack, spend $150 on an independent second opinion first. This is the single highest-return thing in this entire guide.
