Tesla-approved, or just willing to fix a Tesla?
Tesla keeps its own list of approved body shops. These are independent shops that Tesla has trained and equipped to rebuild its cars to factory specification, alongside Tesla's own collision centers. Structural work on an aluminum body, and anything near the battery, belongs there.
A dent, a scraped bumper or a respray does not need that level of shop. Plenty of good body shops handle cosmetic work on Teslas every week. On each listing here, Tesla approval appears under certifications only when the shop states it on its own website. Check it against Tesla's list before you sign the repair order.
Before you hand over the keys
- Ask whether the repair touches the structure or the high-voltage battery. If yes, use an approved shop.
- Ask how they get parts. Long waits for Tesla parts are the main reason repairs drag on for weeks.
- Ask whether they can recalibrate cameras and sensors after the repair, or whether that needs a Tesla visit.
- Your insurer can suggest a shop, but in most states the choice is yours.
Expect a Tesla repair to cost more than the same damage on a gas car, often 20β50% more. Typical figures are in the EV collision repair cost guide.
Questions about Tesla Body Shop
Do I have to use a Tesla-approved body shop?
Not for cosmetic damage. For structural repairs or anything near the high-voltage battery, use a shop on Tesla's approved list or a Tesla collision center, because those shops have the training, parts access and repair procedures for the body structure.
How do I check that a body shop is really Tesla-approved?
Look it up on Tesla's own body shop pages, not only on the shop's website, and ask the shop for its approval documents.
Why do Tesla repairs take so long?
Mostly parts. The labor on a typical repair takes days, but waiting for Tesla parts can stretch it to several weeks. Ask the shop for a parts date before you book a rental.
