How much does Tesla repair cost at an independent shop?
Routine work is broadly comparable to a Tesla Service Center — tyre rotation $50–$100, brake fluid service $100–$180, cabin filter $60–$120. The gap opens on major work. A drive unit replacement runs roughly $4,000–$7,000 independently against $6,000–$8,000 at Tesla, and battery work shows the largest spread because independents can replace individual modules. Do I have to use a Tesla Service Center?
No. Tesla no longer restricts parts sales to its own centres in the way it once did, and independent shops can buy service parts, subscribe to Tesla Toolbox diagnostic software and perform most repairs. Warranty repairs still need to go through Tesla, but out-of-warranty work is entirely your choice.
Will an independent repair void my Tesla warranty?
Not by itself. The Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act prevents a manufacturer from voiding a warranty merely because someone else did the work. Tesla can decline a specific claim if it can show the independent repair caused the failure, so keep invoices and part numbers.
How long do Tesla repairs take?
Maintenance is typically same-day. Drive unit or suspension work usually takes 1–3 days. Collision repair is the long pole — commonly 3–8 weeks, driven almost entirely by parts availability rather than labour time.
Can an independent shop do Tesla collision repair?
Yes, if they are in the Tesla Approved Body Shop Network. That approval requires specific aluminium and structural repair equipment plus I-CAR certification. Body shops in this directory that hold it have it listed under their certifications.
