Why does EV collision repair cost more?
Three reasons: the structure is frequently aluminium or high-strength steel needing dedicated equipment and a separate clean room; the battery pack must be de-energised, inspected and often removed before any structural work; and manufacturers restrict structural repair to approved shops. Expect a 20–50% premium over a comparable combustion vehicle.
Can any body shop repair my EV after an accident?
They should not. Working near a damaged high-voltage pack without training is a genuine safety risk, and most manufacturers will only warrant structural repairs performed by a shop in their approved network. Check for that approval plus I-CAR certification before authorising work.
Will my EV be written off after minor battery damage?
Sometimes, and it is a known problem. Where a manufacturer will not supply an individual pack section, insurers face a full-pack price that can exceed the vehicle value. A shop capable of module-level assessment can sometimes document that the pack is serviceable and prevent a total-loss decision.
