Every Tesla has a second, small battery that runs the computers, contactors, lights and door handles. When it dies the car behaves catastrophically — screens dark, no wake, sometimes doors that will not open — and owners reasonably assume the worst.
It is a $150–$450 repair. If your Tesla will not wake up, this is the first thing to rule out, well before anyone starts discussing the high-voltage pack.

Tesla moved from a conventional 12 V lead-acid battery to a 15.5 V lithium-ion unit during 2021. The lithium version costs more but lasts substantially longer.

Tesla Mobile Service will usually do this at your home or workplace, which is often the most convenient route even at the higher price.
Symptoms of a failing low-voltage battery
- "12V battery needs service" alert — the explicit warning, and the one to act on within days rather than weeks.
- The car will not wake from the app or the key card.
- Screens black or rebooting, or a touchscreen that restarts while driving.
- Doors and handles unresponsive, or the frunk refusing to open.
- Random warning lights across unrelated systems.
- Sentry Mode or cabin overheat protection failing to run.
Do not put this off. When the low-voltage battery fails completely the car cannot close its own high-voltage contactors, which means it cannot charge or drive, and recovering it may need a tow.
How long each type lasts
Lead-acid: typically 3–5 years, and often shorter than in a petrol car. It is cycled constantly by the vehicle's always-on systems, and Sentry Mode is hard on it. Hot climates shorten it further.
Lithium 15.5 V: designed for 8–10 years or more. It handles deep cycling far better, which is exactly the duty cycle a Tesla imposes. Higher part cost, much lower cost per year.
You cannot retrofit lithium to a car built for lead-acid — the charging profile and the vehicle software differ. Replace like for like.
Can you do it yourself?
On lead-acid cars, technically yes — the battery sits under the frunk liner or a panel and it is a conventional swap. Two cautions worth taking seriously. First, on some models the procedure requires disabling the high-voltage system properly beforehand, and the first-aid loop and pyro-fuse are in that area. Second, a mistake here can leave the car unable to wake, which turns a $200 job into a tow.
On lithium cars, do not. The unit is integrated with the vehicle's power management and generally needs registering with the car after fitting. Tesla Mobile Service or an independent Tesla specialist is the right call, and the price difference is small.
