Battery replacement is the repair EV owners fear, and the one most surrounded by out-of-date numbers. Pack prices at cell level have fallen by roughly 80% since 2013; what has not fallen is the labour, the diagnostic requirement, and the manufacturer habit of quoting for a complete assembly when one module has failed.
The single most useful thing to know: a quote is only sane if it is close to your pack size in kWh × $120 to $175. Anything far above that is a dealer assembly price, and worth a second opinion.

Federal rules set a floor of 8 years / 100,000 miles on the high-voltage battery of any EV sold in the US. Several manufacturers go further, and most also guarantee a minimum capacity — commonly 70% — which is the clause worth knowing about.

What actually drives the price
Pack capacity
The dominant factor. At roughly $120–$175 per kWh installed in 2026, a 40 kWh Leaf pack and a 100 kWh Model S pack are separated by more than $8,000 before anyone touches a tool.
New vs remanufactured vs salvage
A new pack from the manufacturer is the most expensive route by a wide margin. Remanufactured packs — rebuilt with tested modules and warranted — typically save 30–50%. Salvage packs from low-mileage written-off vehicles are cheaper again but should only be bought from a shop that tests and warranties them.
Whether the whole pack needs replacing at all
The biggest variable of all. Independent specialists routinely find that one module out of eight has failed. Replacing that module, rebalancing and resealing costs a fraction of a pack — but requires a shop with cell-level diagnostic equipment, because you cannot find a bad module without measuring each one.
Labour and access
Most packs are structural and sit under the floor, so the car goes on a lift and the pack comes out downwards. Budget 4–10 hours of labour at $120–$220 per hour for high-voltage-certified work, plus disposal or core charges of $200–$800.
How to tell if your battery is actually failing
Normal degradation is gradual, roughly 1.5–2% a year. A genuine fault behaves differently:
- Sudden range loss — 20%+ over weeks rather than years. Almost always a specific fault.
- A wide cell-voltage spread — the definitive indicator, and only visible on a proper diagnostic.
- Charging that stops early or slows dramatically, particularly on DC fast charging.
- Reduced power output or a "reduced power" warning under acceleration.
- Thermal management running constantly, or coolant loss around the pack.
Spend $100–$300 on a documented state-of-health test before spending anything else. It tells you whether you are looking at a $2,000 repair, a $12,000 replacement, or a car that is simply five years old and fine.
How to make the pack last longer
Degradation is driven by heat, time at extreme states of charge, and DC fast charging. In order of impact:
- Keep daily charging between 20% and 80%. The single most effective habit. Charge to 100% only when you need the range.
- Avoid leaving the car at 100% or near 0%, especially parked in heat.
- Use DC fast charging for travel, not for daily top-ups. Occasional use is fine; exclusive use measurably accelerates loss.
- Park in shade or a garage in hot climates. Sustained heat is harder on a pack than mileage.
- Keep the coolant service interval. Thermal management failure is a genuine cause of premature pack damage, and it is a cheap service to keep on top of.
