Tesla Model 3 battery replacement cost

The Model 3 is the most common EV in America, which makes its battery the best-documented and the most competitively priced to replace.

Model 3 packs are proving durable. Large-sample telemetry consistently shows around 10% capacity loss at 100,000 miles and a replacement rate under 1% on cars built after 2018 — so if you are here because your range estimate dropped, the most likely answer is normal degradation plus a cold snap, not a failed pack.

Where a genuine fault does exist, the Model 3's popularity works in your favour: the remanufactured and salvage supply is the deepest of any EV, and independent pricing is correspondingly competitive.

Model 3 battery replacement cost by variant

Out-of-warranty, fitted. Chemistry matters: Standard Range cars built from 2021 use LFP cells, which tolerate daily 100% charging and degrade differently from the NCA packs in Long Range cars.

Standard Range (2018–2020, NCA)50 kWh$12,000–$14,500$7,000–$10,500$1,500–$4,000
Standard Range Plus / RWD (2021+, LFP)55–60 kWh$12,500–$15,000$7,500–$11,000$1,800–$4,500

Performance75–82 kWh$13,500–$17,000$8,500–$13,000$2,000–$5,000

Add roughly $200–$800 for a core charge or disposal fee if the old pack is not surrendered.

What the Model 3 warranty covers

Standard Range and RWD cars get 8 years or 100,000 miles. Long Range and Performance get 8 years or 120,000 miles. Both include a guarantee of at least 70% capacity retention, and both transfer to a subsequent owner.

That capacity clause matters. Falling below 70% inside the term obliges Tesla to repair or replace at no charge — but you have to raise it, and you need the state-of-health figure on record. Ask for it at a service visit before the warranty runs out, not after.

Faults that are mistaken for a dead pack

Before accepting a five-figure quote, rule these out — all are dramatically cheaper:

  • 12 V battery failure — $200–$400. Causes alarming warnings and cars that will not wake. Genuinely common on 2018–2020 cars with the original lead-acid unit.
  • Pyro-fuse or contactor — $500–$1,500. The car throws a high-voltage fault and refuses to drive; the pack itself is fine.
  • Coolant heater or pump — $600–$1,800. Produces charging limits and thermal warnings that look exactly like pack problems.
  • Charge port or onboard charger — $400–$1,900. Slow or failed charging with a healthy pack.
  • A single weak module — $1,500–$5,000, versus $14,000 for the assembly.

A cell-level diagnostic at an independent shop costs $100–$300 and distinguishes between all of these. It is the cheapest insurance in the whole process.

Model 3 degradation: what is normal

Aggregated owner telemetry from large fleet datasets shows a steep early drop then a long, shallow curve. If your car is close to these numbers, nothing is wrong with it.

Typical Model 3 capacity retention
MileageTypical retentionRange on a 310-mile car
10,000 mi97–99%300–307 mi
30,000 mi94–96%291–298 mi

150,000 mi85–89%264–276 mi
200,000 mi82–87%254–270 mi

Cold weather can temporarily cut indicated range by 20–30% without any permanent loss. Judge degradation in mild conditions, and over months rather than days.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a new battery for a Tesla Model 3?

$12,000–$17,000 fitted at a Tesla Service Center depending on variant. An independent specialist fitting a remanufactured pack is typically $7,000–$13,000, and a module-level repair — where only part of the pack has failed — runs $1,500–$5,000.

How long does a Model 3 battery last?

Well beyond the 8-year warranty for most owners. Typical retention is 88–92% at 100,000 miles and above 80% at 200,000. Documented replacement rates on post-2018 cars are under 1%.

Will Tesla replace my Model 3 battery for free?

Yes, if it fails or drops below 70% capacity within 8 years / 100,000 miles (Standard Range) or 120,000 miles (Long Range and Performance). The warranty transfers with the car.

Should I charge my Model 3 to 100%?

Depends on the chemistry. LFP packs — Standard Range and RWD cars from 2021 — should be charged to 100% at least weekly, which is what Tesla recommends and what keeps the state-of-charge estimate accurate. NCA packs in Long Range and Performance cars are best kept at 80% for daily use, with 100% reserved for trips.

Where these figures come from

Prices are national estimates for comparison, gathered from published shop pricing, manufacturer parts pricing and owner-reported invoices. Your quote will vary by location, vehicle condition and parts availability.
