Repair, rebuild or replace
A hybrid battery is a stack of modules. When the dashboard throws a hybrid warning, it is often one or two of them that have drifted out of balance, not the whole pack. That gives you three routes:
| Option | Typical price | Makes sense when |
|---|---|---|
| Module repair | $600–$1,600 | One or two modules failed and the rest test healthy |
| Remanufactured pack | $1,400–$3,000 | Several weak modules, car worth keeping a few more years |
| New pack at the dealer | $3,000–$6,500 | You plan to keep the car long term or want a factory part |
Prices are fitted and out of warranty. Model-by-model figures are in the hybrid battery replacement cost guide and, for Toyota's most common hybrid, the Prius battery cost guide.
Check the warranty before you pay
Toyota covers the hybrid battery on 2020 and newer models for 10 years or 150,000 miles, and that coverage passes to the next owner. Older Toyotas got 8 years or 100,000 miles. Other brands differ, and some states require longer cover, so put your VIN into the manufacturer's warranty lookup first. A replacement under warranty costs you nothing.
What a good battery shop will show you
Ask for the test results before any work starts: voltage or internal resistance for each module, and which ones are out of range. Ask what warranty comes with the battery they fit, in months and in miles, and get it on the invoice.
One cheap fix first: on many Toyota and Lexus hybrids the battery cooling fan clogs with dust and pet hair. Cleaning it costs $100–$200 and can stop a healthy pack from overheating.
Questions about Hybrid Battery Replacement
How much does hybrid battery replacement cost?
Out of warranty and fitted: $600–$1,600 to repair one or two modules, $1,400–$3,000 for a remanufactured pack from an independent shop, and $3,000–$6,500 for a new pack at the dealer. Full figures by model are in the cost guide.
How long does a hybrid battery last?
Commonly 8 to 15 years or 100,000 to 200,000 miles. Heat shortens it, so a clean cooling fan and intake matter more than most owners think.
Is a reconditioned hybrid battery worth it?
For a car you plan to keep two or three more years, often yes. Ask whether the shop replaced the weak modules or only rebalanced them, and get the warranty in writing. For a car you will keep much longer, a remanufactured or new pack is the safer buy.
