How much does an EV battery replacement cost?
Expect roughly $6,000–$20,000 for a full pack on most modern EVs, and $4,000–$8,000 on earlier or smaller-capacity vehicles. How long does an EV battery last?
Federal law requires a minimum 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty, and California-emissions states extend that to 10 years / 150,000 miles on some vehicles. Real-world degradation data puts typical loss at 1.5–2% of capacity per year, so most packs still hold 85–90% at 100,000 miles. Outright failure well inside that window is uncommon and usually a single-module fault.
Can an EV battery be repaired instead of replaced?
Very often, yes. Packs are built from modules and most failures are one weak module or a failed contactor, sensor or coolant seal rather than a dead pack. A shop with cell-level diagnostic capability can isolate and replace the failed part for a fraction of the pack price. Dealers almost always replace the complete assembly.
Is my battery covered by warranty?
Check the age, mileage and the degradation threshold in your warranty. Most manufacturers cover outright failure for 8 years / 100,000 miles and will also replace a pack that falls below 60–70% of original capacity within that period. Get the state-of-health figure documented before the warranty expires.
What are the signs of a failing EV battery?
A sudden drop in usable range rather than a gradual one, reduced charging speed, the vehicle limiting power output, a persistent high-voltage warning, or unusual pack cooling behaviour. A state-of-health test costs far less than guessing.
