The EV maintenance schedule
No oil change means nothing forces you into a shop. That is the whole problem with EV maintenance.

An EV service schedule is short, and every item on it is easy to postpone. There is no oil light, no six-month reminder, and no obvious consequence to skipping a year. The two things that quietly punish that — brake fluid and battery coolant — degrade on time rather than mileage, so a low-mileage car is just as exposed as a high-mileage one.
By mileage
Applies to most battery-electric vehicles. Always check your own owner's manual — coolant and gearbox intervals in particular vary between manufacturers.

What no longer applies
Everything below is on a petrol service schedule and simply does not exist on a battery-electric car:
- Engine oil and filter
- Spark plugs and ignition coils
- Timing belt or chain
- Fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors
- Exhaust, catalytic converter, oxygen sensors
- Air filter for the engine (the cabin filter still applies)
- Transmission service in the conventional sense — most EVs have a single-speed reduction gear
- Emissions testing in most states
Plug-in hybrids are a different matter: they have all of the above plus the EV items, which is why they are the most expensive powertrain to maintain rather than the cheapest.
The two items owners actually miss
Brake fluid, every two years
It absorbs moisture from the air whether you use the brakes or not. Old fluid corrodes calipers and ABS components from the inside and lowers the boiling point. $100–$200 every two years prevents a job many times that.
Caliper service, annually in salt states
EV pads last so long that calipers seize from disuse. Slide pins dry, pads bond to corroded rotors, and one wheel starts dragging. $100–$220 a year prevents $350–$800 per seized caliper. Ask for it explicitly — a shop measuring 8 mm of pad will not see a reason to touch it.
Habits that matter more than the schedule
- Charge to 20–80% for daily use. The single biggest lever on battery longevity, other than for LFP packs which prefer a weekly 100%.
- Do not leave the car at 100% or near empty, particularly parked in heat.
- Use DC fast charging for travel, not daily. Occasional use is harmless; exclusive use measurably accelerates degradation.
- Brake firmly a few times a week to keep the rotors clean.
- Check tyre pressures monthly. EVs are heavy and under-inflation destroys both tyres and range.
- Precondition before fast charging in winter. A cold pack charges slowly and is stressed by high current.
Get the battery documented every year
Add one item your manufacturer will not list: an annual, documented state-of-health test, $100–$300.
Three reasons it pays for itself:
- It creates a record if you ever need to claim under the 70% capacity guarantee — an undocumented decline is very hard to argue after the warranty expires.
- It catches a developing module fault while the repair is still $1,500 rather than $10,000.
- It is worth real money at resale. A documented 92% at 90,000 miles removes the single biggest doubt in a used-EV buyer's mind.
Do it in the final year of battery warranty at the latest.
Frequently asked questions
How often should an electric car be serviced?
Annually, or every 10,000–15,000 miles, plus a tyre rotation every 6,000–8,000. Brake fluid every two years and battery coolant every 4–8 years run on time rather than mileage, so a low-mileage EV still needs them.
Do electric cars need annual servicing?
Yes — less work than a petrol car, but not none. The annual visit covers the cabin filter, brake fluid test, caliper service, suspension and tyre inspection, and a battery health check. Skipping it is how cheap EV ownership becomes expensive.
What happens if I skip EV maintenance?
Usually nothing dramatic, until it is. Old brake fluid corrodes calipers and ABS parts; seized calipers ruin pads and rotors; degraded battery coolant undermines the thermal management protecting a pack worth five figures. Each is a small bill deferred into a large one.
Is EV maintenance cheaper than a petrol car?
Yes — roughly 40% less on scheduled maintenance, at $300–$600 a year excluding tyres. Tyres are the offset: heavier cars with instant torque wear them 20–30% faster, at $800–$1,600 a set.
