On an EV the motor does most of the braking, feeding energy back into the pack. The friction brakes are there for hard stops and low-speed manoeuvring, and in one-pedal driving they may be used only a handful of times a week.

Pads therefore last two to three times as long. The catch is that brake components are designed to be used: calipers that never move seize on their slide pins, and rotors that never get scrubbed clean corrode until the pads bond to them. Both problems are far more common on EVs than on petrol cars, and both are cheap to prevent and expensive to fix.

Brake fluid is the one that catches people out

Brake fluid is hygroscopic — it absorbs moisture from the air regardless of how much you use the brakes. Contaminated fluid corrodes calipers and ABS components from the inside and lowers the boiling point, which matters on the one occasion you genuinely need the friction brakes.

Because there is no oil change dragging an EV into the shop, this is the most commonly missed service on an electric car. Every two years, regardless of mileage. It is $100–$200, and neglecting it is how a $150 service becomes an $800 caliper and ABS repair.

Seized calipers and corroded rotors

In states that salt the roads, an EV that never uses its friction brakes will grow a layer of rust on the rotors that the pads no longer scrub off. Slide pins dry out, the caliper stops floating, and the pad wears unevenly or drags.

Symptoms:

  • A grinding or scraping noise on the first few stops after the car has sat.
  • Pulling to one side under braking.
  • One wheel noticeably hotter than the others after a drive.
  • Uneven pad wear between the inner and outer pad.

An annual caliper service — pins cleaned and re-greased, pads freed, hardware checked — costs $100–$220 and prevents essentially all of it. It is worth asking for explicitly: a shop used to petrol cars will measure 8 mm of pad left and see no reason to touch anything.

Keeping the brakes healthy yourself

  • Brake firmly a few times on a dry road each week. Enough to warm the rotors and scrub off surface rust. From about 40 mph down to 10 is plenty.
  • Turn regen down occasionally in winter if your car allows it, so the friction brakes see regular use in the months corrosion sets in.
  • Rinse the underside after driving on salted roads. The cheapest brake maintenance there is.
  • Do not skip the fluid interval just because the pads look new.
