"The charger has stopped working" covers at least four different repairs at four different prices, split across two different trades. Getting the diagnosis right first is what keeps this from becoming expensive.

Roughly: anything on the supply side of the wallbox — breaker, wiring, panel — is licensed electrician work. The wallbox itself and its cable are usually a manufacturer warranty claim or a swap. Most wallboxes carry a 3–5 year manufacturer warranty. Check it before paying for a repair — a warranty replacement is frequently faster than a fix.

Five minutes of checking can save several hundred dollars:

Does the charger have power?

No lights at all points at the breaker or the supply. EV circuits use a GFCI or GFI breaker that trips on tiny leakage currents, and a nuisance trip in damp weather is extremely common. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call an electrician — repeated tripping is a genuine fault, not a quirk.

Does it fail on every car, or just yours?

If a neighbour's EV charges fine on your unit, the fault is in your vehicle — charge port or onboard charger. If your car charges fine elsewhere, the fault is the wallbox or the supply. This one test narrows the bill by an order of magnitude.

Does public charging still work?

A car that DC fast charges normally but will not take AC has an onboard-charger fault: the two use different paths through the vehicle. That is $900–$2,500 of EV specialist work, and no amount of wallbox replacement will fix it.

Look at the connector

Discolouration, melting or scorching around the pins means heat from a poor connection. Replace the connector and check the vehicle port — a damaged port will destroy a new cable, and vice versa.

Repair or replace the wallbox?

Replace when the unit is out of warranty and the control board has failed — a $600 board in a $500 charger is not worth it. Modern units are also meaningfully better: proper load management, more reliable connectivity, and 48 A capability where older chargers manage 32 A.

Repair when it is a cable, a connector or a contactor, or when the unit is hardwired and still under warranty. Cable and connector failures are the most common of all and are the cheapest thing on the list.

One planning note if you are replacing: if you are buying a new EV in the next few years, choose a unit with a swappable connector or plan for a NACS adapter. Connector standards have shifted and a hardwired unit with the wrong head ages badly.

A melted charge port is a warning, not just a repair

Scorching at the charge port is caused by resistance generating heat — a loose pin, a worn contact, or a connector that was not fully seated. Replacing the port without finding the cause guarantees a repeat, and at worst it is a fire risk.

A proper repair covers all of it:

  • Replace the damaged port assembly ($400–$1,200 depending on vehicle).
  • Inspect and, if necessary, replace the charging cable and connector.
  • Check the supply circuit for loose terminations at the breaker and the wallbox — the usual root cause.
  • Verify charging current under load afterwards, not just that a light comes on.

Why does my EV charger keep tripping the breaker?

Most often a GFCI nuisance trip caused by moisture in the connector or a marginal ground. Other causes are an undersized circuit for the charger current, a loose termination heating up under load, or a genuine insulation fault in the charger or vehicle. One reset is reasonable; repeated tripping needs an electrician, not another reset.

Is a broken charger the car's fault or the charger's?

Test with a second charger and a second car. If your car fails on every charger, it is the vehicle's charge port or onboard charger. If other cars fail on your charger, it is the unit or the supply. If DC fast charging works but AC does not, it is the onboard charger.

Can I repair an EV charger myself?

Cleaning a connector or resetting a breaker, yes. Anything involving the wiring, the panel or opening the wallbox: no. These are 240 V, 40–60 A circuits, and in most jurisdictions the work legally requires a licensed electrician and a permit.

How long does an EV charger last?

A good Level 2 wallbox should give 10–15 years. Cables and connectors wear faster — 5–10 years with daily use — and are the most frequently replaced part. Outdoor units in harsh climates sit at the lower end of both ranges.
