EV drive unit replacement cost

The second-biggest repair on an electric car, and one where remanufactured parts have made a real difference to the bill.

An EV drive unit combines the motor, the reduction gearbox and often the inverter into a single sealed assembly. There is very little in it to wear — no valves, no belts, no clutch — which is why most last the life of the car. When they do fail it is almost always bearings, shaft seals or the inverter electronics, and each has a very different price.

Good news on this one: the remanufactured supply is mature, particularly for Tesla, and a rebuilt unit with a warranty typically costs half of new.

Labour is typically 4–8 hours. Dual-motor cars can often have one unit replaced while the other continues to drive the car.

Symptoms, and what they usually mean

  • A whine that rises and falls with speed — the classic bearing signature. Caught early this is a bearing job, not a unit. Left alone the bearing destroys the gears and it becomes one.
  • A clunk on throttle application or lift-off — gear lash or a worn mount. Frequently the cheaper end of the range.
  • Grinding under load — gear damage. The unit usually goes.
  • Fluid on the underside of the unit — a shaft seal. Cheap to fix, expensive to ignore, because running the gearbox low on fluid destroys it.
  • Sudden power loss or a "reduced power" warning — often the inverter rather than the mechanicals. Sometimes a separate, cheaper repair.
  • Shudder under hard acceleration — half-shaft or CV joint, not the drive unit. $400–$1,200.

The pattern here is consistent: a noise investigated at the whine stage is a $1,200 repair, and the same noise investigated six months later is a $4,000 one.

Warranty — check before you pay

On most EVs the drive unit is covered by the same 8-year / 100,000-mile (or longer) warranty as the battery, not the shorter basic vehicle warranty. Tesla covers the drive unit for 8 years and 100,000 to 150,000 miles depending on model; Rivian goes to 175,000 miles.

A great many owners pay for drive unit work that was still covered, because they assume the 4-year basic warranty was the relevant one. Check the powertrain terms specifically.

Remanufactured versus new

A properly remanufactured drive unit is stripped, inspected, fitted with new bearings and seals, reassembled to spec and bench-tested. For Tesla units in particular the supply is good and quality is high. Expect 1–3 years of warranty and roughly half the price of new.

Two things to insist on:

  • Bench-tested, with the report. An untested unit off a shelf is a gamble at this price.
  • A stated warranty term in writing, covering parts and the labour to refit if it fails.

Ask about the core charge too. Most remanufacturers credit $300–$1,000 for your old unit, and it should be itemised on the quote rather than quietly kept.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace an EV motor?

$2,200–$5,500 for a remanufactured drive unit fitted at an independent, or $4,500–$8,000 for a new one at a dealer. If the fault is caught at the bearing or seal stage, the repair is $900–$2,500 instead.

How long do EV motors last?

Most outlast the rest of the car. There is very little to wear, and high-mileage taxi and fleet EVs routinely pass 300,000 miles on the original unit. Failures are usually bearings, seals or inverter electronics rather than the motor itself.

What does a whining noise from an EV mean?

Some whine is normal — it is the reduction gearbox. A whine that is new, getting louder, or clearly rises and falls with road speed usually means a drive unit bearing. Investigate it early: a bearing caught in time is a fraction of the cost of the unit it will otherwise destroy.

Is the drive unit covered by warranty?

Usually yes, under the powertrain or battery warranty rather than the basic one — commonly 8 years / 100,000 miles or more. Check the specific term before paying out of pocket.
