A Prius battery is 28 nickel-metal-hydride modules in series (or lithium-ion on newer cars), sitting behind the rear seat and cooled by a fan that pulls cabin air through a filter. That fan is the single most important thing in this guide: when its filter clogs with dust and pet hair, the pack overheats and modules die years early.
Cleaning it is a $100–$200 job. Not cleaning it is the most common reason a Prius needs a $2,000 battery at 140,000 miles instead of 220,000.

The cooling fan is usually the story
The battery fan intake sits low beside or under the rear seat, exactly where dust, pet hair and dropped debris collect. A restricted intake means the pack runs hot, and heat is what kills NiMH modules.
Worth doing every 30,000 miles, or annually if you carry pets:
- Remove and vacuum the fan filter (accessible from the rear seat area on most generations).
- Clean the fan housing itself — filters catch the coarse debris, but fine dust builds up on the blades.
- Check the intake vent is not blocked by cargo, a child seat or a floor mat.
A shop will do the full clean for $100–$200. It is the cheapest hybrid maintenance there is and it routinely adds years to a pack.
Module repair or full pack?
A P0A80 code means the battery management system has found at least one module outside tolerance — not that all 28 have failed. Whether to repair or replace comes down to mileage.
- Under about 130,000 miles: a module repair at $600–$1,400 is good value. The remaining modules have life left.
- Over about 150,000 miles: go for the remanufactured pack. The other modules are all near end-of-life, and you will be back within a year chasing the next one.
In either case, have the fan cleaned at the same time. Fitting a new pack into a car with a clogged cooling system just restarts the clock on the same failure.
Warranty coverage
Toyota hybrid batteries on 2020 and newer vehicles carry 10 years or 150,000 miles. 2019 and older cars have 8 years / 100,000 miles in most states, extended to 10 years / 150,000 miles in the fifteen states following California emissions rules — which includes California, New York, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington, Colorado and others.
Check which applies before paying. A 2016 Prius in California may still be covered where the same car in Texas is not.

Can I replace a Prius battery myself?
It is possible and there is a large DIY community around it, but the pack carries around 200 volts DC and demands proper isolation procedure, insulated tools and care. Get the procedure wrong and it is genuinely dangerous. If in any doubt, the labour saving is not worth it.
